I’ve discussed the benefits of casual sex in this article. Other social issues include age and race. According to a 2010 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, older adults have more sex than young people, but that rate drops with age.
Another study published in the International Journal of Preventive Medicine in 2016 found that 77 percent of women of all ages and demographics in the U.S. have had vaginal sex. For men, the percentages are as high as 88 percent. However, roughly 10 percent of the respondents felt that the experience “turned out badly,” according to the Washington Post.
Race is another factor to consider. I spoke with Dr. Akhtar Saeed, a cognitive neuroscientist who studies sexuality and race relations, about the delicate issues at hand.
“The key question, for me, is whether the ways we approach this are rooted in racist attitudes,” Saeed told me. “Many people think casual sex is just a thing all people do, because they think of sex as inherently good and fun, and just something you can say no to. However, I think, with the social climate today, people tend to be drawn to sex and less to people in general.”
When I asked him specifically about his experiences as a Pakistani-American, Saeed explained that he grew up in a culture where seksua (sexually oriented) jokes were a running joke among friends.
“I have heard some jokes that, at least for some people, being a ‘white ass’ is a dirty thing. If you are perceived as having ‘white privilege,’ that’s viewed as having privilege over other races — not desirable,” he explained, adding that the intention was to reinforce that “if you engage in casual sex with a white person, you are taking away from the experiences of other marginalized groups, who have faced systemic racism and struggle to be seen by the majority. They are the ones whose experiences of casual sex are rarely discussed.”
So that’s all great, but how exactly does casual sex get abused? Turns out, plenty of studies have already studied the repercussions of casual sex, including what happens when you have it with someone you don’t care about.
What’s more, if you’re not a casual kind of person, it’s easy to feel like a casual sex experience is inherently not good, no matter what. What’s more, studies show that the actual act of casual sex can also be interpreted as bad by those who are not on the scene (see: feminists), assuming that it

Though, casual sex still can be associated with risk, according to sexual health experts. The simple fact is that all sex carries with it risks. Most of these risks, however, are pretty common and can be largely avoided. Research found that people who had casual sex were at a higher risk of contract STDs, including bacterial infections. Specifically, women who reported having casual sex were more likely to have chlamydia and other bacterial infections.
But the chances of catching an STD from a casual hookup aren’t too dangerous if you protect yourself, and there are a few precautions you should put in place — such as getting tested before and after a date, using a condom, and avoiding having unprotected sex outside of a committed relationship.
Use protection
This is a good time to talk about condoms, and they should always be used during sex in addition to other protection (like dental dams or lubricant), regardless of whether it was casual or not. Condoms prevent STDs but are not 100 percent effective, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The “never use latex condoms” folks tell you
Let’s say you’re out at a restaurant and meet someone you like. You hit it off and he convinces you to go for a walk. The idea is to get to know each other, not hook up. But either way, you end up having sex. In the end, is this casual sex?
Unprotected sex increases the risk of contracting a serious STD, and doctors say that people should use condoms during sex all the time — even if they plan on having sex. In fact, a 2014 study that looked at 7,000 people at three different universities found that the highest rates of STDs were found in people who reported never using condoms in their sex lives.
Having protected sex also raises the potential that you will get pregnant.
But this isn’t to say that unprotected sex is without dangers. Erectile dysfunction, which can be caused by a serious and sometimes fatal heart disease, and prostate cancer are both conditions that can occur as a result of heavy alcohol use or drugs. Many people assume that casual sex is a pretty safe option in light of these conditions. But STD prevention is just as important for individuals who engage in casual sex as it is for those who have intimate relationships.
Know your risk
Knowing that you are a person who has sex with people you don’t see as your romantic partner can make casual sex safer and more fun. Knowing yourself as a person who has sexual needs
