The history of AutoCAD begins with the drafting program DRAFT. Released in 1986 by a small group of Autodesk employees who wanted a product that enabled them to draft quickly and efficiently and at a low cost. With its ability to draw freehand and quickly re-draw sections, DRAFT became AutoCAD R16 in 1989. With R16, the toolset became a full-fledged 2D CAD system, with a 3D toolset to be released in R17 (1989). Since then, AutoCAD has been produced by Autodesk. The name AutoCAD is a trademark of Autodesk, Inc., registered in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and other countries.

AutoCAD was first released in 1989 for the IBM PC, with 3D geometry initially available only in 2D mode. It did not include any embedded objects and was limited to “pen-on-paper” input. In its first version, AutoCAD was the only CAD program for the IBM PC. The first non-IBM PC version came out in 1991 for the Apple Macintosh and in 1992 for the IBM-compatible DOS operating system.
