There is a cloud app called Google Drawings and Google Sheets where I don’t have a copy of AutoCAD. I did use Google Drive for a short while and liked it, but it’s not something I’d use often.

I’ve used PowerPoint a lot and I think PowerPoint is more than sufficient for what I need. It’s not the most user-friendly software out there. I use it for designing prototypes and roughing out fonts.

Word is simple, has a small footprint, and is fairly functional.

You could use the Windows Paint app on a Mac and export the drawing as an EPS and use the software you’re accustomed to.

Any drawing program that you have access to on a computer will work for you, assuming the computer has the required components.

The reason I’m asking is because I’m having to work remotely, and I really don’t like working on a computer I don’t have access to. I have a home studio and I’m fine with doing that. If I’m going to do anything, I need to be on my own hardware.

I don’t have any specific questions about design software, but if you have any insight into how I should be approaching this, I’d appreciate it.

Since you are not having access to a 3D printer, what about making your own? Well the 3D printers that cost less than $1,000 are still in the prototype stage. People make them out of Legos, soapstone, wood, and even metal. Since you are using AutoCAD, it would be pretty easy to make your own.

With a metal frame, mesh/fabric, etc… you can make things that are more or less the same quality as AutoCAD drawings, but if you wanted to, you could make a 3D printed part. They would probably still have to be put together. There is an interesting company called 3dprinting.io that has a parts store. If you search for it on Etsy, I believe there are some low-priced, but quality models that you can buy.

I would probably opt for the open source route and use the free, open source version of AutoCAD. It’s pretty easy to do. Or if you know a little bit about programming, you could use some type of SDK and make your own design software.

As a side note, I would definitely recommend the CadSoft CADD 2011 software
