Installing Windows applications on Linux/Mac
There are a few ways to do this. Winehq has a good page explaining the different options. The Wine website recommends using PlayOnLinux.
If you want to run Windows applications on Mac:

Double click the dmg file.
Choose open.
Click the drop down menu at the top left.
Choose the application.

Download Winetricks
Download the latest version from winetricks.org.
Install
Run winetricks for your version of Windows.

Double click winetricks.bat and follow the on screen instructions.

In the same directory as winetricks, run the following command.

Installing Wine is similar to installing programs in Linux.

Download Wine from the Wine project.
Run the downloaded file.

PC – Pidgin Personal Bar (Karma Ace) has a special keybinding to open it.
Mac – Pidgin Personal Bar can be controlled by the following key combinations:
PC: Alt+C
Mac: Ctrl+1 (Opens personal bar)
Mac: Ctrl+3 (Hides personal bar)

HOW TO USE:

1. Open the Preferences dialog.
2. Click on the “Keyboard Shortcuts” tab.
3. Open the “Menus” section.
4. Click on the “Keyboard” button.
5. In the “Keyboard” dialog, enter “PersonalBar” (without quotes) for the command, and press the “Add Shortcut” button.
6. In the “Shortcut Key” text box, enter “Alt+C” (without quotes) for the shortcut, and press the “Add” button.
7. Click on the “OK” button.
8. Click on the “Quit” button to close the “Keyboard” dialog.
9. To see the shortcut, click on the “PersonalBar” button.

NOTE:

1. To hide or show the Personal Bar, click on the “PersonalBar” button.
2. To toggle Personal Bar visibility, click on the “PersonalBar” button.
3. To show a small menu at the top of your buddy list, click on the “PersonalBar Menu” button.
4. The sidebar will only appear if there are more than one account.
5. If the sidebar is visible, clicking on the “PersonalBar Menu” button will hide it.
6. The sidebar can be resized by dragging the right border.
7. You can resize the width of the sidebar by double-clicking on the right edge of the bar.
8. The Personal Bar can be resized by dragging the left edge.
9. You can move the Personal Bar to a different location by dragging the title bar.
10. You can show all messages by double-clicking on the middle of the bar.
11. The only message in the bar will be the message you set in the dialog.

NICE TO HAVE:

1. To delete one of the accounts, select it, and click on the “Remove” button.

This plugin allows you to customize your display name and personal message for multiple accounts.

You can also hide the personal bar in your buddy list, which will make it a lot easier to avoid seeing the status bar when other people add you to their buddy list.

You can also change the colour of the status bar in the buddy list.

In GTK2, GTK3 or GTK3.8 and Qt, with GJS backend, this plugin requires GJS for the status bar.

Configure:

Quick Start:
Install and enable the pidgin-personal-bar-gtk plugin:

To hide the personal bar:

Choose View menu > Personal bar > Hide.

To change the status bar colour:

Choose View menu > Personal bar > Status bar color.

To change your display name or personal message:

In the status bar, click on your account name.

A menu will appear, which you can click on to set your display name or personal message.

You can also click on the button at the top right of the buddy list to edit your buddy list, and from there you can choose who to display your message to.

Further Info:
The personal bar settings are saved to your account settings.
To disable the personal bar, go to Edit > Personal bar > Hide.
To change the personal bar colour, go to Edit > Personal bar > Status bar color.
The personal bar is hidden in all buddy lists, except for the buddy list you are in.

Since version 2.8.0 (December 2009), Pidgin has integrated the Pidgin Personal Bar.

To see the Personal Bar, click on your buddy list icon.
To hide the Personal Bar, click on your buddy list icon.
You can always bring up the Personal Bar by pressing the F12 key.

Note: On non-GTK-based systems, there is no option to hide the status bar.

Bugs:
You can’t change the color of the Personal Bar.
You can’t change the font used for the Personal Bar’s display name and personal message.

Pidgin personal bar (alternative status bar):

In Pidgin 2.7, they added the “Alternative Status Bar” feature (which allows the user to hide/show the status bar of the buddy list). They also integrated the “Personal Bar” option to the “Alternative Status Bar” feature.
The “Personal Bar” option is similar to the “Pidgin Personal Bar”, but it shows your personal message in the “Alternative Status Bar” option.
To see the “Personal Bar”, click on your buddy list icon.
To hide the “Personal Bar”, click on your buddy list icon.
