History
AutoCAD was initially developed by Engineering Systems, Inc. (ESI), a company that eventually became Autodesk. After that company filed for bankruptcy, a group of former employees started a company named AutoCAD Solutions. It was based on the original AutoCAD source code, which was available to them. A $3.9 million investment from investors such as Wal-Mart enabled the company to expand their support and development. However, as in the previous venture, the company was sold off. The new company, Autodesk, was formed in 1997. In 2003 Autodesk sold AutoCAD to a consortium of Japanese investment companies (Sumitomo, Daikin, Mizuho, Mitsui, Oriental Securities, etc.). A large portion of Autodesk’s profits comes from the sale of AutoCAD, which has gained a reputation as the “AutoCAD killer app”.

AutoCAD was first released in 1987 and was originally an extensible architecture that had support for several languages (such as C, Basic, Pascal, and Turbo Pascal). The language was also extensible, allowing users to write their own languages. This support was eventually removed and in version 2000, it was replaced with Visual LISP, a programming language that was not implemented in AutoCAD, but did have support from VisuLISP (VLS) – a plugin framework that AutoCAD runs on top of. Visual LISP was an add-on to AutoCAD that allowed the user to create a visual development environment for making drawings.

Because AutoCAD was originally intended for engineers, it included advanced features that allow the user to develop macros and scripts. This feature was later introduced into VisuLISP, and is available to programmers who are writing a plugin for the product. AutoCAD has had many versions since the original release, with each new version being a major update. The most recent version is AutoCAD 2010, released in August 2010.
