History

AutoCAD was first released in 1982 as one of the first 3D CAD programs. It was originally developed at the San Jose State University and later sold to Autodesk, where it is still supported.

Version 2 (1987) was a fast-growing program due to its relative affordability and ease of use compared to then competitors. In 1992, AutoCAD 4 was released. Its increased capabilities and compatibility resulted in the number of users of AutoCAD to soar. AutoCAD 4.5 was released in 1995 with the latest version being AutoCAD LT. The software became even more complex and popular. Users could now download AutoCAD Parts directly from the software itself, reducing the need for inventory tracking. AutoCAD V5 was released in 1998. It offered 3D view-ports and better interoperability with other software such as SolidWorks and AutoCAD LT. It would also be the first version of AutoCAD to support the BIM-partner exchange format.

The 3D features of the 2004 release of AutoCAD LT (which had been renamed from AutoCAD Architectural for this release) were so improved that it was finally able to compete directly with other applications such as 3ds Max.

AutoCAD 2007 was released in February 2007. The first part of the title contained some changes to the user interface to make it friendlier to newcomers. A couple of major upgrades were also added such as support for Windows Vista as well as ease of handling complex drawing files.

The 2007 release of AutoCAD was part of a decision to concentrate on the user interface and usability. One major feature was that the user could now access a family tree of drawings in the cloud, rather than having to store their data on a local computer. This feature can be accessed from any computer and is stored in a central location such as an Autodesk Exchange account.

The Line, Arc, and Spline tools that are familiar from earlier releases now have a new Tool menu with additional commands and a ribbon panel with additional settings.

A new drawing display mode is available to support a variety of UI enhancements.

AutoCAD software is now more suited to working with open documents, which allows you to do everything you need to do without closing and re-opening documents, including exploring and working with the contents of the active drawing, as well as exporting, printing, and printing in PDF format.
