A common location for wall mounted switches in older homes is at the end of a long fixture run so that you don’t have to run the wires to the switch from every fixture. The switch is usually mounted in a spot where it’s close to the switch, or in an adjacent closet.
You have a small bathroom with a tub and shower. The center of the vanity has a sink. The vanity usually comes with a wall mounted light and the switch is mounted on the wall with the light fixture. The floor to ceiling height of the vanity and the space around it are very small. You don’t want to run a long wire in the small area.
In your case, the switch is on the wall, not next to the vanity. The tub and vanity are about the same height. So a short wire should be fine. It’s not likely that there are any extra outlets nearby that you could switch the light on or off. The bathroom has a tub, but the switch is near the front wall where the light switch is probably mounted. You can test the switch by putting the light switch in the “on” position. If the light comes on, then you know that it’s working. If it doesn’t work, then it is probably a bad switch. You can then go to the local hardware store and buy a replacement switch.
