Programming languages
Visual LISP

AutoCAD originally used Visual LISP for a number of reasons:
Visual LISP is an established programming language that predates AutoCAD. As such, AutoCAD programmers are familiar with LISP, which allows AutoCAD designers and users to leverage the power of the LISP language as an extension to AutoCAD.
Visual LISP is a powerful programming language. Visual LISP is used for applications such as AutoCAD and Dynamo. With AutoCAD, the user can create LISP code in AutoCAD that allows him/her to perform certain operations and drive the program.
Visual LISP, being an interpreted language, is extremely fast to learn, allowing AutoCAD users to begin customizing AutoCAD from day one.

Visual LISP was discontinued in AutoCAD 2016 for Windows and is no longer supported in AutoCAD 2011 and later for Windows.

AutoLISP
AutoLISP (Automatic LISP) is a dialect of the LISP programming language and a framework that allows the use of LISP in AutoCAD.

AutoLISP was introduced in 1994 and was used to create various third-party AutoCAD add-ons. Later, with version 8.0, AutoCAD added a limited form of AutoLISP to the program, which enabled the use of the scripting language for customizations.

Visual LISP

Visual LISP is an extension to AutoLISP. It enables you to customize AutoCAD with Visual LISP scripts. It is particularly useful when you want to customize AutoCAD by automating repetitive tasks. This programming language works by itself or in conjunction with AutoLISP to create interactive forms that will enable users to customize their AutoCAD environment.

To create a Visual LISP script, you must open the appropriate program for Visual LISP (e.g. LISPworks). A new script can then be saved into the Visual LISP program.

AutoCAD and Visual LISP are two different programs, but they interact with each other.

All files created with Visual LISP have the extension *.isl, while files created with AutoLISP have the extension *.sls.
