History

In the early 1980s, several CAD software companies started to develop desktop CAD software for the home or small business market. These early programs used custom built hardware with internal graphics controllers to show 2D and 3D drawings. These CAD software packages were available for the Apple II, CP/M, DOS and microcomputer systems. AutoCAD evolved from these early CAD software packages.

AutoCAD shares many of its lineage with other Autodesk software packages, such as 3ds Max, Maya, Inventor, and SketchUp. AutoCAD is the first 3D software package from Autodesk, and also the first autoshapes (building shapes used for construction of 3D models) from Autodesk.

Part of AutoCAD’s success was the development of a high performance graphics engine, which is also shared by other Autodesk packages. Autodesk has developed its own rendering techniques for high speed visualization of 3D models and animations.

Up until the early 1990s, a separate video card was required to display 2D drawings. This allowed manufacturers to market CAD software on computers without built-in graphics controllers (the DOS personal computer was the first to make this possible).

Development

According to Autodesk, its development team was originally made up of 37 people and the first release of AutoCAD came out in December 1982. Today Autodesk has an annual sales volume of more than $3 billion, with over 150,000 users in 180 countries.

AutoCAD

AutoCAD is a 2D and 3D CAD software application. Autodesk’s press release announcement said that in 1982 “AutoCAD was the first CAD application developed specifically for the PC”.

In addition to being able to display 2D and 3D drawings, AutoCAD has several other features. It can be used as a drafting software application (the ability to create 2D drawings) or a 3D design software application (the ability to create solid 3D models or surface models).

AutoCAD 2010 is Autodesk’s newest version of the software. It was released on November 12, 2009. In AutoCAD 2010, its user interface has been redesigned with the “3D Everywhere” concept. It also has new drawing tools and new drawing and dimensioning techniques.

How to handle these structures?

Say I have a pointer to a structure:
typedef struct A {
int a;
int b;
} A;

A *p;

Now how to declare this structure so that it can be used as follows?

(*p)->a // OK
p->a // error: “expected expression”
p.a // error: “expected expression”

A:

First of all, there’s no such thing as typedef struct. What you have is (on top of that, only on top of that, which is quite irrelevant):
struct A {
int a;
int b;
};

When you write
(*p).a

this is just another name for
p->a

So to make the dot work, what you’d have to do is to define:
typedef struct A {
int a;
int b;
} A;

or:
typedef struct A {
int *a;
int b;
} A;

And if you now want to do:
(*p).a

you just have to write:
(*p).a

The same applies to p->a.
