Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas is an action role-playing game developed by Aurene, Milkspring and MonkeyPaw Games, and published by Devolver Digital for the PlayStation Vita and Windows on May 30, 2016. Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas follows in the tradition of the classic adventures of the genre known as rpg, or role-playing video games. The player assumes the role of the protagonist, an explorer who ventures out to discover new lands in exchange for rewards. The characters in the game are able to use their skills, weapons and gear in order to fight the forces that block the way to finding the treasure and finally reach the end of the game’s exciting story.

GameplayOceanhorn was created with the basic ideas of making a game similar to classic titles like Chrono Trigger, EarthBound and Final Fantasy 8, in which puzzles and travel are coupled. The gameplay is simple and at the same time robust enough to accommodate many devices, the limitations and challenges of the Vita such as its native controls.
The game is controlled from an on-screen touchpad, represented in the game by an analogue stick on the bottom of the screen. The rest of the controls are on a vertically oriented interface with d-pads on the left side and a shoulder button on the right. When the game is paused, the player can control the camera, while in-game, the camera can be panned or zoomed with either the control pad or the shoulder button. The right shoulder button can be used to change the game’s folder (the ship where the player sails to the islands) or search for items. Other buttons include an on/off switch for items and weapon power, the one-time use of a medkit and the ability to fast-travel to the dock in case the player dies or comes across unexpected enemies. Health is restored with food or healing potions. Items can be gathered from treasure chests or used to craft new items and equipment. Aspects of the item system can be improved by equipping worn weapons from the adventure on new bodies to better accommodate the player’s play style.

DevelopmentOceanhorn was originally a Kickstarter project to raise $52,000 by the end of 2013. The developers had to make the game longer and upgrade the graphical style to fit on the larger Vita. Developer Monkeypaw had originally talked about having as many as 10 playable characters and six hours of gameplay. Originally written for the Vita, the developer was inspired by the game Poupp
