creddump is a software application that will dump passwords from user’s credential files and show them in they’re cleartext form.
Credential Manager is a new SSO solution that Microsoft offers in Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP to provide a secured store for credential information.
Credential Manager allows you to input username and passwords for various network resources and applications once, and then have the system automatically supply that information for subsequent visits to those resources without your intervention.
One example is the command:
net use * \computer_nameshare_name /user:user_name password /savecred
Credential Manager stores user's credentials in the following files:
– Enterprise Credential Set:
Documents and Settings%Username%Application DataMicrosoftCredentials%UserSID%Credentials
– Local Credential Set:
Documents and Settings%Username%Local SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftCredentials%UserSID%Credentials
On WindowsXP, the application "Stored User Names and Passwords", that can be found under Start-> Settings-> Control Panel-> User Accounts-> �count% -> Manage my network passwords, allows you to manage this kind of credentials.
HOW IT WORKS:
The program follows the same methodology used by Todd Sabin in his PWDUMP2 program to decrypt credential files. It uses the "DLL injection" technique to run a thread in the same security context of the Local Security Authority Subsystem process.
The thread's executable code must first be copied to the address space of LSASS process and this requires an account with the SeDebugPrivilege user right.
By default, only Administrators have this right. Once injected and executed, the thread will run with the same access privileges of the Local Security Authority Subsystem and will use the native undocumented LsaICryptUnprotectData API from LSASRV.DLL to decrypt the credentials file.
The thread stores the output of this API in a temporary file named cred.txt located in the same directory of the program. Finally, the user's credentials are dumped and put on the screen.
Credential Manager can store various kind of passwords, they can be saved as MultiByte or WideChar strings, security BLOBS, and certificates too. The choice of the final encryption method is left to the user.
The program will try to recognize plaintext passwords stored as MultiByte strings or WideChar strings, and will also decode Passport and Standard (no entropy) credential BLOBS originally stored using the CryptProtectData API.
USAGE:
Copy the executable files (creddump.exe, creddump.dll) in the same directory and type creddump at the command prompt.

Credential Manager: Decrypt Credentials Files
creddump will decrypt credential files stored in Windows, for example in the user Documents and Settings, under the application Application Data. Currently, Credential Manager supports only Windows NT and 2000 credential files, if your Windows version is lower than XP, this means that you cannot work with Credential Manager.
In Windows 2000 or NT, the credential file is located at
%WINDIR%\System32\drivers\etc\passwd
You can dump all credential files saved during a session with the following command:
creddump -d
This command dumps the credentials stored in the Application Data folder.
creddump is a little bit different from other credential dumping applications that store credential in a file that can be opened later on. In fact, by default, creddump saves the credential in a hidden file named “cred” in the directory of the program execution. If you decide to change this directory to your Desktop or to another directory, for example “My Documents”, just create the file “cred” in the directory you want and change the working directory.
Note: Windows Explorer has an option to display a list of hidden files and directories.
UNINSTALL:
After being used, the application can be uninstalled by typing “creddump /uninstall”.
Credential Manager is not for free; it requires Microsoft SYSKEY, for Windows 2000 and NT and Credential Manager Pro for Windows XP.

Windows XP has a new service called Credential Manager that is completely different from the old tool, for that there is the open source version and I forgot to add the CREDSIM service. The latter is used to backup your credentials to disk, and I think it is more appropriate to tell Credentials Manager 3.

STORAGE ERRORS

Credential Manager does not work properly if:
1) NTFS is not available, or
2) Credentials are not specified within a single directory:
In this case, Credentials Manager will dump credentials from Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft Credentials

Try to dump user’s passwords with local Administrator account. You will see that “Credential Manager is currently turned off” in the application “Information”.

I’m back with another Watercolor Update. This is “Falling Leaves” in the middle stages of development. I am enjoying the process of developing an “in-between” style. This is because I really like the simplicity of the “basic” style. I’ve also been enjoying trying to create a painting that reminds me of watercolors I’ve seen done by people like Tami Davenport.
