CSS Image Embedder is a C# Winforms application which scans a CSS file for image (and other file) references, in the form of: “url(somefile.jpg)”.
It then encodes each image using the data URI scheme and replaces references to the image in the CSS with the encoded data. This effectively allows you to embed images in your CSS files.
Note: The program will work with HTML pages (and similar files), but only if the image has been used in an inline css style. Image tags or other means of embedding images will not be affected.

To install, download and run the application, right click on the file (such as the installer or executables) and select “Run As Administrator”.
For VSTS build tasks (and tasks from other systems), you’ll need to run the installer as a post-build step before the build is run.
You can also add the program as a startup item.
The public release of the program is still undergoing some testing, and thus should be considered incomplete for most use cases. However if you would like to get involved or check out the source code, please feel free to do so.

Here is an updated release, to fix the problem with the cache not being cleared after a build was made (and would result in the same image being used for several years).

In this release, I cleaned up the source and added a new installer, which hopefully should work better with the Visual Studio installer.
NOTE: The installer will look for the source folder (with the name “src”) in the same folder as the exe. (If you want it to look in a different directory, edit the project file).
NOTE: There is another installer that will place the source folder in the Program Files folder.

There are a number of ways to use the program.
The first two ways are by creating a new file in the “Data” menu (described below) and copying and pasting the information from the Data menu to a new CSS file you would like to use this in.

In the Data menu, there are five main options. They are:

Start a new file – Opens a new file and can be used for clipboard data.

Copy to clipboard – Copies the data to the clipboard, ready to be pasted into a new file.

Data URI – Encodes the data as data URI.

Data URI safe – Encodes the data as data URI, but using a safer string (which can contain spaces, underscores and special characters).

Data URI safe filename – Encodes the data as data URI, but using a safer filename (which can contain spaces, underscores and special characters).

The final two options are the Main and Options menu.
