The ResQfloppy appliction provides a set of tools that will let recover inaccessible data from bad floppies. Attempting to recover such data with disk repair utilities, will cause further and irreversible damage to the floppy, ruining all chances to recover anything from it.
ResQfloppy will first make an exact clone of the bad floppy and let you work on the clone, without further deteriorating the already ruined disk.
ResQfloppy was originally written to recover a friend’s book manuscript from a bad set of floppies.
Probably the worst mistake people make when attempting to recover Data from inaccessible disks, either floppy or hard, is that they perform operations on it directly. This usually worsens the problem unless they know exactly what they are doing.
The first rule in data recovery is to never write directly to a bad Disk, nor attempt fixing the damaged media, until you have regained full functional read/write access to it, and you have copied all of the files from it you need.
When you are unable to access ( read/write ) a floppy the problem is usually the magnetic media has defective sectors. Floppies usually develop defects in those areas where data is written. Sometimes, however, the physical sectors where the boot sector or root directory are placed become defective. If the sector is critical for accessing the floppy, such as the boot sector or root directory, then the system will be unable to read the floppy at all. Yet if you can read or write to it, then the floppy may only have defects in areas where the data is written. Portions of your data, typically one or more files, are then inaccessible.
The latter problem can SOMET IMES be recovered using a disk or file system repair utility, such as CHKDSK, or SCANDISK, or a third party utility, such as Norton Disk Doctor. When these tools are used, however, the changes are generally irreversible. If the result is worse than the original condition, then there may be no way to reverse the changes you have made.
For this reason, it is helpful to prepare an exact replica (clone) of  the source floppy on media in good condition, such as on another floppy without any media defects. Recovery can then proceed without concern that the recovery effort itself may make the situation worse. Any disk editing tools or methods at your disposal can be used on the
clone.
Unfortunately disk copy programs typically abort when trying to read, copy, or duplicate a floppy with media defects. Even though there may be completely intact files on it, copy tools generally abort preventing users from copying or accessing even intact files.
RESQFLPY solves this problem by producing an image file of a SOURCE floppy even when it has defective sectors in data area, root directory, or boot sector. Defective sectors are ignored, or read by force where possible, during generation of the image file.
RESQFLPY outputs a display to the screen during the copy operation and defective sectors will be indicated and counted. This display reveals the extent of the damage on the disk.
RESQFLPY can copy the image file to a freshly formatted floppy without any media defects producing a workable CLONE of the original. There is no limit on the number of clones you can make from the same image file.
It is now possible to try as many methods as you wish on the clone without further deteriorating the already defective source floppy. When the boot sector of the source floppy is bad then you can install a fresh one to the clone with FIXBOOT /S (force floppy size). This is usually enough to access the cloned floppy, if a bad boot sector was
what prevented access to the source.
If the source disk has media defects in the FAT or root areas then you can try CHKDSK, or SCANDISK on the cloned disk, to attempt recovery of the files. If these DOS tools are insufficient, then try any other disk editing tools you may have such as DISKEDIT on the clone. Since RESQFLPY allows you to produce as many clones as you wish, you
can attempt as many recovery trials as are needed without any risk of further harming the original source diskette.

Both the source floppy and the cloned floppy can have media defects as long as it is not a protected diskette. If the source floppy has defective sectors then RESQFLPY will provide an indication of the number of bad sectors on the source floppy.
This copy technique can be used to recover floppy disks, and other media like partitions.
ResQfloppy is safe to use even on bad floppies. It does not erase the original source floppy, nor create a new one. Because of this RESQFLOPPY is not considered as part of the program group that is common with most data recovery utilities.
The image file is saved in the file system of the destination floppy. This file system must be FAT 32.
The image file can be used to recover any file from a bad floppy. However, since the FAT32 file system can only have 16 files, only 16 file recovery is possible.
Another issue with this method is that if the number of bad sectors is low and the bad sectors are not too far apart, then the floppy can be partly recovered. However, if the number of bad sectors is large, then the file will not be recovered.
Another issue with the image file recovery is that it is possible to recover multiple copies of the same file. This can result in too many files appearing in the Finder, and in some programs, or files existing in the other disk. ( For example, the individual files on the hard disk may include the same name as files on the floppy. Disk Defragmenter, Windows Explorer, and other disk editing programs may merge these files in the Finder or other tools. )
Beware that the image file produced by this method is not a bootable disk. Therefore, it is not possible to boot the image file using BIOS or any other Boot Disk Manager.
ResQfloppy uses the RESQFSPY command line mode of RESQFSPY.COM to produce the image file, and to save it to the destination floppy.
It requires a FAT 32 file system, and a perfectly good floppy with no media defects, to recover the image file.

From version 4.0 up, including the 4.2 beta, the functionality presented in this version is significantly different. There are basically 2 versions, one for DOS and one for Windows.
For the DOS version, most of the functionality is similar to the Windows version, but the application will still try to recover inaccessible data from a failed, defective, or damaged floppy.

If the floppy is bootable, but is booting with an error, you can also press the CANONICAL button to try to correct it. If the problem is a corrupted boot sector, RESQFLPY may try repairing the boot sector by using Fixboot /S.
If the floppy is not bootable, the scan will attempt to locate a rescue floppy or floppy image, in case it is available. If such a floppy image is located, it will be bootable and the floppy will boot. It will then attempt to recover the data from the image, and you can attempt recovery methods on it as before.
When the scan has completed, the data from the image is converted to a DOS formatted image file, and the image file is copied to the floppy. The menu options for the clone have changed, and are listed below, with their respective equivalents in the Windows version.

Hello, I do not believe RESQFLOPPY is a very good program, it is based on unnecesary theory and works with unnecesary tools and methods. You can consider me that I am an idiot, but allways I say that this is not true. How you can rebuild the bad disk? Every problem come from the fact that you is trying to unnecesary replace stuff (data, root directory, boot sector, test directory…) instead of trying to see the process of replacement. You must think in the bad files as in a tree: you try to cut the bad branch, it is not possible so you must remove the whole branch and it’s top part of the tree until they reach the root of the whole tree. You can not replace the data of the bad branch, you must remove the root directory of the bad branch and so on. That is what is not possible, if you try to replace the data of a branch which is not correctly build, the build of the tree is unrecoverable ( be assured, unnecesary data replaced is still unrecoverable even if the bad disk was not corrupt )!
If you try to fix the bad branch, with the bad disk, you will generate :
(*) The bad root is replaced but the data of the root directory remain, if you try to repair the bad root directory then you will generate a branch left in the tree.
(*) A bad branch is replaced with the bad root and you will generate a branch left in the tree.
(*) A bad link ( space ) is replaced with a link where the first part is the copy
