The T-100 was designed in early 1958 as a pathfinding machine for Bell Labs’ recently acquired 4,000 ft2 computer center. The design team was led by Harry Haverford, a Bell Labs engineer who had previously worked on the ENIAC computer and also designed the IBM 701 minicomputer. E. C. Denniston, an engineer working on the ENIAC project, designed the T-100 instruction set.

The T-100’s 5,200-transistor control unit weighed about 710 lbs (325 kg), and it occupied about 6,750 ft2 (660 m2) in its hermetically sealed case. The rest of the T-100 filled about 30,000 ft2 (3,000 m2). Together, the machine weighed about 20,000 lbs (9,000 kg), and to get it on the road to the show floor a military plane was used to transport it from the main Univac plant to the Bell Labs facility in Pascagoula, Mississippi.
