(Reuters) – One day after it asked the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to exempt itself from a landmark law intended to prevent “too big to fail” Wall Street firms from taking excessive risks, Dow Jones & Co is reported to have met resistance from at least one SEC commissioner.

Dow Jones’ request to be removed from a list of financial firms that must provide detailed financial statements is part of a $1.5 trillion stock market sell-off since Oct. 1 prompted by a crash in trade and manufacturing in China, CNBC reported, citing sources.

The company has “met significant resistance from one commissioner,” Dow Jones’ chief executive Steve Russell told CNBC in an interview on Monday.

An SEC spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Dow Jones had already been struggling in recent months to raise funds for its U.S. operations to pay debt, including a federal tax of $116 million in February 2017. The company has since moved to focus on its Dow Jones-branded financial information unit, and raised $670 million from Goldman Sachs in a stock sale completed last year.

Dow Jones, which publishes the Wall Street Journal, and News Corp’s Dow Jones & Company are both private companies, headquartered in Midtown Manhattan, with different approaches to how much risk they will take.
