BJP’s poll preparations are smooth despite warning from RSS

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is confident that it can repeat the blitzkrieg in the Lok Sabha polls that helped it sweep the states in 2014, BJP’s poll manager, Govindraj Naik, said on Wednesday.

“In 2014, the BJP had contested all 234 seats. We will not contest more than 200 seats this time,” Naik said at a media interaction organised by the party’s national general secretary, Ram Madhav, in New Delhi.

He also said the ruling party plans to contest around 300 seats in every state.

“We are not completely silent,” he said, referring to the mid-term polls coming up early next year. The elections will be held simultaneously in five states and one Union Territory.

“But we do not have the capacity to govern,” Naik added.

Naik also rubbished speculation that the BJP will not have enough money to fund its election machinery.

“We have never shortchanged an election in the past. All this noise is going on. What we have done is publicised our election expenditure over the past few months,” he said.

The BJP has been drawing up electoral and campaign plans well in advance.

The state unit has already begun organising meetings with booth-level and parliamentary-level unit heads and the chief ministers of five states to prepare the ground for the poll.

Naik said that the party is fully confident of repeating its 2014 “superposition” strategy where one section of the state — usually the dominant party or the alliance partner — sweeps the polls.

“Superposition is what the BJP believes in. The strategy is to make sure that we win more seats in the mid-term than the opposition, so that there is no seat swap and no crossovers. Then we have a shot at the chief ministerial position,” Naik said.

He added that BJP leaders have been asked to declare the seats they are fighting on.

“We cannot but fight on even a few seats. But no chief minister will be forced to declare. We are sure of this,” Naik said.

On NDA allies Shiv Sena and the JD(U), which may make a comeback in Bihar elections next year, Naik said their presence in the party has not been curbed, but there is no question of an alliance with them as of now.
