You can select the layers by pressing the Tab key to scroll through the layers in the thumbnail view.

You can use three different modes to work with layers:

Normal editing mode: In Normal editing mode, you can paint, draw, and use a selection tool, just as you would with any layer. You can freely move, resize, and rotate the layers just as you would any other image.

Normal editing mode plus: This mode includes all the tools in the normal editing mode (see Figure 1-3) plus additional tools, such as a magic wand tool that allows you to select and paint areas of pixels in an image. In this mode, you can make adjustments to an individual layer. To create a new layer, simply click the New Layer button at the bottom of the Layers palette. To move, resize, or rotate a layer, just click it and drag it to a new position in the image.

New Layer dialog box: In this mode, you can view individual layers and make modifications to them. By using this mode, you can perform the edits shown in Figure 1-4 and Figure 1-5.

Adobe Photoshop brushes

Photoshop has a large selection of brushes, and they’re available in a range of sizes and types. These can be used for effects like painting, retouching and compositing. In the layers palette, double-click the Brush icon to open the Brush Editor.

All brushes have a handle which is the area you click to access the brush settings. If you’re not happy with the default settings then you can change this in the Brush Tool Settings dialog.

You can preview a brush in the Brush Tool Preview panel. To change the brush size, type the number key to open the Brush Tool Settings dialog. You can see a preview of the brush in the Tool Options panel as you type. You can check that you’ve set the correct size by clicking on the preview in the Brush Tool Preview panel.

Click OK to apply the new settings.

To change the brush opacity, double-click the brush’s fill handle or enter the opacity value in the opacity box.

If you’re not happy with the current brush settings, or you want to create a new brush, click the New Brush icon at the bottom of the Brush Tool settings dialog.

You can choose from a range of brush options including, size, orientation and hardness.

If you’re creating a new brush, the Brush Tool Settings dialog’s size options are simply:

Pixel: Specifies the brush size in pixels.

Density: Specifies the brush size in dots. You can specify a number from 1 to 6, as well as ‘dense’,’smooth’ and ‘hair’.

You can also specify a name for the brush as well as a ‘blend mode’ — either Normal, Screen, Soft Light, Overlay, Multiply, Darken, Lighten, Color, or Vivid Light.

The default blend mode is Normal but you can change it by double-clicking the blend handle.

Brush Settings: To create a new brush set, click the New Brush icon at the bottom of the Brush Tool settings dialog.
