Creating a New Photo Project in Photoshop

In this exercise, you find out how to create a new empty photo project to contain your next image editing action. You want to use a project to save and reuse your images. Projects are different from layers because they allow you to apply effects to all copies or instances of your image within the project. If you apply an effect to a layer, it is only applied to that layer. Because a project is not actually a layer, it allows you to use the same effect on all of your images.

Note that you can also create a blank document for an image by using File⇒New, or choosing the Blank tab from the File menu.

If you plan to reuse your images, it’s a good idea to rename the document and save it. You are free to do so, but if you don’t, Photoshop sorts the images in the same order in which they appear in the source images. If you change your mind and change the project name, it won’t sort your images in a way that you find confusing.

If you need to get an image out of Photoshop for printing, right-click (control-click) the image and choose Save for Web and Devices.

1. From the File menu, choose New⇒Photoshop Project.

The New Photoshop Project dialog box appears, as shown in Figure 8-1.

2. In the Name text box, type a name for your project.

If you use the same name for multiple projects, you can always save the project as a preset so that it appears in the New Project dialog box when you open it again. You can download photoshop-presets.com for a list of available presets.

3. From the Choose a Folder drop-down menu, choose a location to store your project.

4. From the Source Format drop-down menu, choose the format that you’re going to use for the images.

You can install Elements and continue to work with it just as you do in a traditional, full version of Photoshop.

To open an image file, simply click on it in a folder. Select the file and you can open it in an image editing window to work with it.

To save your image, click on the image at the top of the file and choose Save.

To make changes to an image that you’re editing, double-click on an image in the image window.

If you make hand-drawn images, they might need a bit more than they are getting in Photoshop Elements.

The following tips will help you create a print-ready image.

Choose the right resolution

The minimum resolution of your image should generally be between 72 and 300 px.

Save up to 300 px: This will save you some disk space and make your image print better (conserve paper).

Save at 72 px: This will have a much smaller file size, but it might not print perfectly.

Use a higher resolution only if you need a much higher quality print.

Use a default setting of 72 or 300 px if you’re just playing around or making a small number

Hershey’s Kisses

Christmas is coming very soon and I am still on the hunt for just the right gift for my girls. Well, for my daughter it is another one of those special things, some sort of branded cosmetics or perfume. But my elder daughter is big on vanilla-flavored. She is quite fashionable, she loves wearing designer jeans, stylish tops and of course accessorize with some bling (I think her word is ‘bling’). I asked her what she likes, from her beauty supplies and that’s how I found out that she was more fond of Kisses (by Hershey’s).

What she likes is actually the Kisses chocolate center candies, the ones with the pink syrup flavor, it makes her feel just like she has just eaten a kiss. As a matter of fact, she gets her friends to give her some kisses and then she feeds them to her dolls.

I thought it would be a nice idea to pack her a little bagful of Kisses chocolates, so she can enjoy a chocolate treat when she’s feeling down. Since she is already into Kisses candies, I asked my neighbor to prepare a box of Kisses for her, she was so excited! But her reaction was “no, not just any Kisses candies, I wanna have chocolate with Kisses….”

I’m going to find the Kisses scent in the office for her too, as that will be sure to put a smile on her face too.
