Lightroom is one of the software applications that are installed by default on Raspberry Pi 2 and 3.

Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have announced a new system to help maintain the DNA contained in living organisms — bacteria, micro- and macrofungi, even E. coli — suspended in a fluid solution, or biopreservation.

The system, based on the pyridoxal form of vitamin B6 and semiconductor mineral selenium and described in an article published online this week in the journal Biotechnology for Bioengineering, can help delay the degradation of genomic DNA (gDNA), and allow for the long-term storage of genetic material, as well as optimize the preservation of bacterial cultures.

“This combination has been used in many areas. It can be used to protect gDNA from enzymatic degradation,” said Yang. “For instance, gDNA can be used to test the fitness of the pathogens to determine whether a drug could be effective against them.”

Yang’s team recently used gDNA for an investigation into E. coli and this study has allowed the researcher to establish a new hypothesis about how the bacterium can adapt to extreme environments through epigenetic modification. The hypothesis states that the bacteria has three potential ways to respond to heat shock: (1) up-regulation of transcription factors; (2) up-regulation of chaperone proteins; or (3) down-regulation of membrane proteins. He wants to continue to research the function of membrane proteins in regulating the balance of gene expression in E. coli under temperature extremes, in order to better understand how the bacterium can deal with a changing environment.
