Create a new layer and type the following text:

Anytime you create a new layer, the layer you’re creating becomes the first layer of that layer group and is always on top.

Double-click on the paper icon in the Layers panel to go to the default Layer > New Layer menu, as shown in Figure 1-1, which you’ll learn more about in Chapter.

Figure 1-1. You can always create a new layer by clicking the Layer icon on the Layers panel or double-clicking on the paper icon in the Layers panel. The paper icon appears in the Layers panel whenever there is a new layer being added.

2. Rename the new layer a Blurred Background using the Layer > Rename menu.

Note that you can also rename a layer, simply by double-clicking on the layer name. Once the layer is renamed, it is easy to delete or insert a layer by dragging a layer from one layer group to another. For example, you can delete an image layer by dragging it from the Photo shoot group to the Background group.

3. Create a new layer above the Blurred Background layer and type the following text:

This new layer becomes the layer in the foreground of the layer group.

4. Name this new layer a Background Layer using the Layer > Rename menu.

You now have three different layers on top of your image, as shown in Figure 1-2.

5. Increase the brightness of the top layer by pressing the opacity slider, which is located to the right of the layer title in the Layers panel (see Figure 1-3).

In the Layers panel, the top layer is visible as the layer with the eye icon and has some transparency in the opacity area. Press the Opacity slider to increase the opacity of the Blurred Background layer.
