## The Blender 3D Program

3D images are produced by working on the image data itself. This can be done in Blender, a 3D program. Depending on your computer’s graphics hardware, you can often create photorealistic images that are useful. It doesn’t require the level of photorealistic image production that a high-end graphics program does, but it does the job just fine.

This 3D program uses the concept of procedural texture. It simulates the appearance of every part of a model by using a simple set of rules. You can get very different results depending on the rules used. Figure 1-3 shows an example of procedural texture.

Figure 1-3. A photo of a sunset was procedurally textured. The light colored areas are the areas that are most likely to be in sunlight. You can see how the light that hits each of the colored areas is scattered differently. The darker, softer colors are less like the sun and more like clouds.

The previous example shows one of the simplest textures. You can make much more intricate patterns. See if you can spot the pattern in Figure 1-4.

But Photoshop might not be your preferred tool for editing images. In these cases, you’ll need to find alternatives.

I like using a photo editor tool that’s compatible with a huge number of devices including smartphones, tablets and computers. Most photo editor apps have similar features that are relevant for image editing.

Here are some alternatives to Photoshop, most of which are free, as well as some small tools that you might want to have on your device to touch up an image on the go.

1. Pixelmator ($39.99)

Pixelmator is a powerful and affordable application that features a simple interface. The basic version is free. However, you’ll need to pay $39.99 to download the pro version, which includes extra features such as the ability to open large high-resolution images.

This tool has a simple interface that’s designed to make editing pictures as quick and easy as possible. When you click on an image, the editor will automatically detect any changes you make and automatically apply them to the selected area of the image.

In addition to basic image editing features, Pixelmator comes with a flexible selection tool that makes it easy to isolate objects. For example, you can either select a part of an image and move it around or select a piece of text in the image and cut it out. When you’re done, you can paste it anywhere else in the image. This makes it easy to remove unwanted objects from the image.

2. Pixelmagick ($49.99)

Pixelmagick is another simple and feature-rich photo editor tool. However, this one’s aimed at more advanced photo editors. For example, you can easily convert images from one format to another, like JPG to BMP.

The program has a similar interface to Pixelmator. You can select an object in the image by either clicking on a specific area or dragging to the edge of the image. The selection will be clearly marked in the image so you know exactly where you are.

The Pixelmagick editor has a simple tabbed interface that makes it easy to access different tools. For example, you can easily crop, rotate and resize the image. However, this feature can be a little tricky to use. For example, using the rotate tool will show you a grid as well as a dial. When you turn the dial, the image will rotate around the grid.

The Burn and Dodge tools allow you to create more realism and control over an image. They can be used to add highlights and shadows.
The Gradient tool enables you to create gradient (or color transition) effects easily.
The Healing Brush and Liquify tools are used to fix objects and enhance images. Liquify can be used to create and modify complex textures, whereas the Healing Brush is a quick-fix tool.
The Levels tool allows you to adjust the overall image brightness and contrast.

The Photoshop Keyboard Shortcuts

Photoshop enables you to perform various actions using keyboard shortcuts. The most commonly used shortcuts are listed in the following table. For more information on shortcuts, see A-Z index of Photoshop keyboard shortcuts.

* F: Fills a selection, or places a path on a new layer.
* Ctrl-I: Selects the Inverted Selection option, or inverts a selection. You can use this tool to remove unwanted parts from an image.
* Shift-L: Creates a new layer.
* Shift-J: Creates a new image.
* Ctrl-L: Locks a layer to prevent changes made to the selected layer.
* Ctrl-E: Enlarges or reduces the size of an image.
* Ctrl-Alt-B: Prints the active image to the printer.
* Ctrl-X: Clears the image or removes the last selection.

DHS released the third of three reports today detailing the results of its binational workshops for border security. The three reports come in the wake of Trump’s border wall and immigration talks, in which DHS touts as a success its ability to quickly turn up at the border, tell stories of the scourge at the border, and offer recommendations to stop it.

But as the report makes clear, that’s not the reality for most people who work on the border or live in border communities.

There is little doubt that there are transnational criminals, and there is no question that they pose a threat to the people, institutions and organizations with which DHS must work. But it is also clear that in the communities alongside the borderlands that Trump has spoken of during his tough-on-border-crime rhetoric, the border is not a place of disaster.

Homeland security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen is not the only one claiming to have found things we’re not being told about. Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX), a presidential candidate looking to capitalize on the current surge of attention about the border, also put out his own report on the border today. And it too revealed that life is not particularly dire for many on the border.

O’Rourke’s report finds that “in counties along the border, illegal border crossers are less of a problem than most people think.” It also finds that the people of the borderlands are “even less likely than in other parts of the country to be victimized by crime.”

Nielsen is more emphatic in her report than O’Rourke was in his, however.

It was clear from the outset that this is not a good time to cross the border. The border is wide open, and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is calling on citizens to bear witness to this “humanitarian crisis.” It’s a crisis that is being manufactured by the government and not by the people who live in the borderlands. In spite of that, fewer people were apprehended than were anticipated, and fewer than a million were detained in all of Fiscal Year 2018. That’s less than one-tenth of one percent of the population of the United States.
