Plastic waste in the oceans is a common sight and can become ever more prevalent over time. Researchers from the University of Queensland, NOAA’s Ocean Exploration Technologies (OET) and the Australian Centre for Field Robotics (ACFR) in Western Australia have found that plastic is increasingly found inside and on the surface of creatures that inhabit the world’s largest marine park.

This is seen particularly in tropical waters such as in the Gulf of Mexico, where surface waters and subsurface sediments were found to have a high concentration of debris. Oceans cover 71% of the Earth’s surface, a space that has an average depth of 4,500 metres and accounts for 71% of the planet’s water.

Constant deposition of plastic debris into the oceans for about two centuries now, plastic has even been found inside fish. Researchers from OET and the ACFR in November conducted a survey of marine life in the Gulf of Mexico using an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) that takes video and photographs.

It’s not known how plastic affects fish or other marine life, but it’s thought that everything from a fish’s mouth to its gills is vulnerable to plastic pollutants. The research from the University of Queensland and the ACFR was published in Current Biology.

Although many species were observed with some plastic debris, scientists found that the most prevalent objects were ‘ghost nets’ – in other words, nets that had decomposed and had materialised in the water.

Subsurface debris was frequently associated with different kinds of fish, and was the predominant material found inside catfish, mutton-fish, rays and conger eels. These types of fish were found mostly near the northern Florida coast, not far from where OET’s AUV was deployed.

Surface plastic debris was commonly associated with eels, snapper and garfish that were found in large numbers and in tropical waters, in the Gulf of Mexico.
