To judge our strategy, we collected 500 subjects that trended in some time window (sampled from earlier lists of trending matters) and 500 that did not (sampled from random phrases in tweets, with trending matters removed). We then tried to predict, on a holdout set of 50% of the subjects, which one would pattern and which one wouldn’t. For subjects that both our algorithm and Wordwide twitter hashtags’s detected as trending, we measured how early or late our algorithm was relative to Twitter’s.
