Cholecystectomy (CE) is frequently performed for removal of symptomatic cholelithiasis in the elderly. Although osteopenia has been found in the elderly following CE, osteopenia may begin to develop even in younger subjects after CE. The effects of CE on bone mineral density (BMD) of young (6-month-old) and old (24-month-old) male and female rats were compared to sham surgery (SHAM). CE caused a significant loss in femoral BMD in both young and old female rats, and in the 24-month-old, male rats. Smaller decrements in femoral BMD were seen in the SHAM groups of the young and old female rats. Osteopenia was absent in the SHAM-operated groups of the young and old male rats. Renal BMD was decreased in the old female CE rats and significantly decreased in the young female CE rats. For the old male CE rats, renal BMD was not decreased by CE. Renal BMD was significantly decreased in all three SHAM-operated groups of the old male rats, and in the young female SHAM rats. The decreases in femoral and renal BMD in the femoral CE rats were similar to the decreases in the old female femoral SHAM rats. In contrast to the major loss of femoral BMD in the femoral CE rats, femoral and iliac cancellous bone volumes were not decreased by CE in any of the groups, indicating that cancellous bone depletion occurred only in the cortical portions of the femoral and iliac bones. The decrements in femoral BMD following CE seen in the young and old rats were within the normal age-related losses in BMD found in female and male rats.
