Active rootkit components also may be found in system memory or on a removable media device such as a CD-ROM, a floppy disk, or even a USB flash drive. The rootkit components that are stored on a removable media device generally include a driver for the media device.

Tools such as Process Explorer or Process Monitor may reveal if a rootkit component is currently in memory. The Rootkit Revealer utility also may be used to view the presence of rootkit components.

Setting a computer to a “boot into safe mode” or other mode may reveal rootkits that attempt to activate their components even in safe mode.
