Use of projections in the Ensemble Kalman Filter

I’m studying the Ensemble Kalman Filter, which consists of a ensemble of ensemble Kalman filters.
The EMF as described in most textbooks I’ve looked at (e.g. here, Chapter 11) consists of two components: the forecast (forecast model, $p$ in the notation of the textbook) and the Kalman gain (a linear transformation of the forecast, $K=T^{ -1}p$).
The EWF, however, doesn’t have the forecast or the Kalman gain. Instead, the filter consists of a sequence of linear projections $n_i$ of the ensemble member states $x_i$, i.e.
$$
z_i = n_i x_i
$$
The authors of the paper that presents the method (here), state that $n_i$ is used to reduce the problem of designing the forecast covariance to choosing a (time-dependent) projection $n_i$.
Their figure 2.1 (page 6, left) shows the forecast covariance matrix of an ensemble of $N=10$ systems (green line). The figure shows the state in the absence of measurement error (i.e. $\Sigma_{ij}=\Sigma_{ij}^0$ and $\Phi_{ij}=I$). The blue line is the forecast covariance of $z_i$ without the projection $n_i$.

I have used it for years. I have it as a backup to my power management software now, but I find it excellent as a stand-alone app. Download it while it’s free, then get the pro version when it goes up for sale.

This is a great little program. I like the idea of letting it be running in the tray, so you can just activate and deactivate it. It’s pretty simple and performs it’s functions really well. I found that the Hibernate mode is the one I use the most often, so I “borrow” it and use it when I need it.

NoSleep! is a small, competent application that can be used for work or play. I use it when my computer needs a hard reboot (cleaning up a logged on session) or when I need to quickly shut down my computer.

I haven’t had a problem with this program. I use it when I want to sleep my PC, saving the state of the machine before it goes into sleep. Simply put, I love this program. I recommend it to anyone who needs to turn off a computer.

I cannot recommend this program enough. It works exactly as I want it to work and it’s small, not even requiring to be installed. When I want my PC to sleep, it goes into sleep mode, beeping faintly and keeping my apps open, ready to be opened again when I pull my finger from the mouse.

I have been using it for a while now, and I find it a perfect little app. It’s small, so you don’t need a huge desktop. It’s simple and easy to use, the only thing it lacks is a settings/preferences dialog, but that
