Definitive answer to my question on bugfixing<\/p>\n

I have asked the question – “How to set the global value to the local value for an XML node? ”
\nand I will be grateful for the answer providing the solution.
\nHowever I have received some contradictory answers – some with at least partial similarity to the solution I was seeking and some with a completely different solution. I have chosen that particular answer by kuroikata as the answer because I think the combination of the use of the where clause and result function was suggestive of a solution.
\nHowever, the answer has since been edited by the author (and is now the accepted answer).
\nAs such I would say this behaviour represents a reversal of the policy I understand exists – that the original asker of the question, gets the answer they ask for, and that if there is a new answer they can choose to accept the answer they prefer. This was not the case here.
\nI understand that the accepted answer is now the correct one but could an explanation be given as to why the original answer remained the accepted one, for some time after the question was originally asked? I suspect that this may be a question of some significance to the Stack Exchange community.
\nIt is not a question about my need to accept one or the other answer, only that I want to know what the rationale is for this policy to adopt.
\nI am not seeking a discussion – if there are objections to that I would be happy to understand them. I am also happy to accept the answer as the correct one – if only that it provides a justification for the policy.<\/p>\n

The policy has changed. When there is a long-running series of answers to a question of what is factually a good answer, the original author can select the accepted answer for their question.
\nThis is in line with how Google handles questions. For any given search, it selects a single answer as the answer to the question. We just try to make that answer more visible in a certain time-zone of search results.
