Government agencies are known for posting sensitive information on public websites. But new research indicates that employees\u2019 credentials are also routinely exposed, in part by website design weaknesses.<\/p>\n
Security experts revealed this week that a recently disclosed government data breach resulted from weak website security, in the form of incomplete password reset mechanisms and incomplete security countermeasures. The breach occurred last December, and exposed the credentials of some 13,000 current and former employees of a Department of Homeland Security contractor in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n
The US-CERT, the computer emergency response team within the Department of Homeland Security, first discovered and remediated the issue on Jan. 10, 2009. An article published by the agency describes how a user posted a publicly accessible page that contained information that listed credentials and personal telephone numbers for more than 13,000 employees of a DHS contractor. The publicly accessible page was hosted on a website that was accessible to anyone who knew the URL of the website.<\/p>\n
The company hosting the website was a subcontractor working for Federal Emergency Management Agency, which hired multiple other companies to manage parts of the website. According to the US-CERT, the subcontractor was not involved in creating the most recently edited pages.<\/p>\n

The US-CERT said that it tracked the compromised information through a maliciously created website that mimicked the firm\u2019s. The malicious website injected code, including JavaScript, into a publicly accessible web page.
