Japanese researchers have achieved record breaking data transfer speeds through a long 1,864 mile optical<\/a> cable, reaching a lightning fast 319 terabits per second.<\/p>\n

This is fast enough that you could transfer 10,000 high definition movies at about 4 Gigabytes each in just one second, although won’t be available to the average home.<\/p>\n

This sort of technology is used in the back-end networks of broadband providers and then split up among hundreds or thousands of customers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

This new record smashes the previous best speed for data transfer over a long distance of 172 terabits per second, also set by a team from ‘s National Institute of Information and Communications<\/a> (NICT) in Tokyo.<\/p>\n

The new system is compatible with existing infrastructure, meaning networks could be easily upgraded, as the cable is the same size, the team explained.<\/p>\n

Researchers say these sort of speeds will be necessary for back-end-infrastructure as services place ever greater demands on internet infrastructure, including through faster speeds from 5G networks, as well as the internet of things and streaming.<\/p>\n
