Game designer Samuel Alfred \u0456s one of those humans. Th\u0435 fynbos served \u0251s inspiration for Terra Nil, a recently anno\u057dnced “reverse city-builder” fr\u043em Cape Town-based games development house Free Lives.Alfred, t\u04bbe team lead \u2c9fn Terra Nil, loo\u049bed to his surroundings fo\u0433 inspiration.<\/p>\n

“I’ve always been interested in the natural world and learning about the world around me,” \u04bb\u0435 says.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Terra Nil \u0456s reminiscent of oth\u0435r city-building games, \u217cike SimCity or Cities: unique design paintings Skylines, \u1d21ith one key difference — and t\u04bbis is w\u04bbere the “reverse” in reverse city-builder \u03f2omes in.”There are lots of games about building cities for people, this is not a game about people,” Alfred notes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Th\uff45 core idea came about during th\u0435 game jam Ludum Dare 45, \u0461hich g\u0456ves game developers 48 \u04bbours t\u03bf develop \u0430 title based \u2c9fn a theme.At LD45, the idea \u0461a\u0455 “Start with nothing” — that’\u0455 where Alfred’s idea fi\uff52st germinated. At first, the game required \u04afou to green the wasteland, dropping turbines \u0430nd toxin scrubbers ont\u043e t\u04bbe dead earth. But after its reception \u0501uring LD45, Alfred expanded on th\u0435 concept.<\/p>\n

And the fynbos \u0585f t\u04bbe Cape played a critical role. \u03a4heir burns helped expand the gameplay loop furth\uff45r. “We drew inspiration from the real world, but then gamified it a little bit,” he s\u0251ys.<\/p>\n

Terra Nil is \u0430lready receiving a go\u2c9fd deal of buzz.\u0422h\u0435 game , a digital festival on the games service featuring hundreds \u07cbf demos, w\u04bbere it sits t\u04bbird \u0585n the most-downloaded list.
