Thrombotic events and endothelial damage as detected by post-ECMO lung biopsy were evaluated. Factors related to thrombosis were analyzed using the logistic regression test. Thirteen thrombotic events occurred in 13 (16.9%) of 77 children during ECMO, and two children (1.3%) died of multiple organ failure. The initial median platelet count was 200 \u00d7 109\/L (range, 1-1,600 \u00d7 109\/L); the median platelet count on the day of the thrombotic event was 1,248 \u00d7 109\/L (range, 15-3,000 \u00d7 109\/L). Multivariate analysis identified platelet count 5 days as independent predictors of thrombosis, while post-ECMO radiographic findings of pulmonary edema were associated with increased thrombotic events in multivariate analysis. Five patients had evidence of intimal proliferation at lung biopsy.
