The two most influential books of this past year have been John Mearsheimer’s brilliant “The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict” and Steven Walt’s devastating “The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy.”<\/p>\n
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has had the same deadly impact as it has had on American politics for the past 30 years. Most serious analysts now agree that this long-running disaster is not going to end soon — and that it will not go away until Palestinian terrorism and Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza are ended.<\/p>\n
Both Mearsheimer and Walt have been scholars for a long time, and have been the object of envy and dislike from a variety of academic quarters. We met briefly in 2006, when Walt visited the University of Chicago to be a guest lecturer. (The lecture in question was Mearsheimer’s.) Our meeting was cordial and friendly, but some years have passed. So I thought I’d spend a bit of time reacquainting ourselves before we embark on this project together.<\/p>\n
In the book Walt is summarizing the central proposition of his and Mearsheimer’s theory of “group-loyalty,” a concept which has been discussed on this blog several times over the past two years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
