Three months ago, it emerged that the company had hired away its head of paid marketing, giving it oversight of ads. At the time, that was not particularly unusual. But then Facebook took this bit of transparency and amplified it, going so far as to publicly disclose the names of some of its ad vendors as part of a move to counter opposition to its operations.<\/p>\n
That was a drastic move. But what followed was even more startling.<\/p>\n
Today, Facebook announced that the company\u2019s revenue \u2014 which has previously been closely held \u2014 will begin to be shared with Wall Street analysts. The move was widely panned on social media.<\/p>\n
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that \u201cthe significant step, which is likely to be met by skepticism from investors who have seen disappointing results from Facebook\u2019s ad business, comes amid concerns that tech companies are undercompensating for their fast-growing user bases.\u201d<\/p>\n
It\u2019s curious to note that this is the WSJ\u2019s first mention of \u201cFacebook\u2019s fast-growing user base.\u201d And it has no problem using the phrase \u201cfast-growing\u201d despite the fact that Facebook had a slower quarter in October than in any previous quarter.<\/p>\n
But it\u2019s true that the company is growing its user base, which would be the basis for the revenue growth. Or is it?<\/p>\n
In a footnote on the company\u2019s Q3 2018 earnings call, Facebook said that \u201cFor the nine months ended September 30, 2018, we recorded $11.4 billion in revenue, which grew 30% annually.\u201d (That\u2019s a slight misnomer, which the company clarified on another point during the call.) But it does not mention growth in users. And a closer look at the numbers reveals that it may not be growing its user base by 30% annually.<\/p>\n
First, let\u2019s address those user numbers. Sure, the user base is growing, but it\u2019s growth has slowed. Facebook added 2.2 billion monthly active users in the past year.
