A municipal councilman in Austria issued a stinging rebuke to the citizens in his country who were protesting against the country\u2019s military involvement in U.S.-led NATO military drills in neighboring Poland.<\/p>\n
The protesters are angry about the fact that, according to the pro-NATO Austro-News, some 15,000 Polish troops are expected to participate in the Varsavia 2017 military maneuvers, a large-scale maneuver planned to take place between August 7 and 18.<\/p>\n
Austria protested the exercises as well.<\/p>\n
Instead of having a national debate about his country\u2019s participation in such drills, Varsavia Mayor Valentin Weil was hoping that the Varsavia community would \u201cfind a more sensitive solution\u201d by exploiting the situation created by the external military exercises.<\/p>\n
Weil said that the more than 10,000 soldiers and thousands of tanks and other military vehicles who have already arrived in the Varsavia region and are set to stay for the duration of the drills, would be considered as \u201ca locus minoris\u201d\u2014 something that belongs to this place but has nothing to do with the residents and the area.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is not fair to the people who live in the Varsava region,\u201d he told Austrian broadcaster ORF.<\/p>\n
Weil also said that NATO \u201cshould not train in Austria\u201d and that, since an alliance with the United States is of central importance for Vienna and the rest of the nation, the Austrians should just \u201caccept\u201d that they will have to deal with such military drills.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am not against the United States,\u201d he said. \u201cHowever, I am against the alliance and I cannot accept what is happening here.\u201d<\/p>\n
Weil\u2019s comments come just after Austria\u2019s opposition Green party released a statement saying that the United States is \u201csystematically trying to weaken Europe\u201d and that if Poland decides to take part in the drills, the result would be the \u201cdestruction of Europe\u2019s last major independent state.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Austrians\u2019 wariness about the security alliance that they have so enthusiastically embraced has increased since Trump\u2019s election victory.<\/p>\n
In January, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said that the international order crafted by the U.S. is \u201cgreat,\u201d adding that the U.S. \u201cwill defend it,\u201d and his interview<\/p>\n
