The band\u2019s Instagram account posted a video of frontman Serj Tankian and guitarist Daron Malakian telling fans in their native Armenian that they\u2019ve been working on new material. System of a Down have been writing new music since 2012 when Tankian released a lyric video for \u201cThe Punishment\u201d from the band\u2019s fifth album.<\/p>\n
In 2017, Tankian posted on Twitter \u201cold bros,\u201d with the hashtags \u201csoad\u201d and \u201cguitarheroes.\u201d Tankian also opened up about the band\u2019s plans on \u201cThe Ringer,\u201d a podcast hosted by Scott \u201cGrizz\u201d Robinson.<\/p>\n
During an interview in 2018 with Metal Hammer, Tankian said the band had been working on new music.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe always joke about what\u2019s coming next, and me and Daron are having this internal conversation about what our next project would be,\u201d Tankian said. \u201cWe don\u2019t really talk about it out loud, but Daron\u2019s always had this intention to do something together. We haven\u2019t done anything like it since the first two albums.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tankian released the first single from the new album, \u201cB.Y.O.B.,\u201d on June 25. The track\u2019s release drew comparisons to the band\u2019s signature song \u201cChop Suey!,\u201d from their third studio album, \u201cToxicity.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cB.Y.O.B.\u201d was the first to be released from the band\u2019s upcoming album, due out in the fall.<\/p>\n
System of a Down have been relatively inactive over the past decade. The band has been reviving its reputation by touring the U.S. multiple times since 2012. System of a Down will be performing at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, Tenn., on June 13.<\/p>\n
