Jacques S\u00e9v\u00e8re de Longueville, comte de S\u00e9gur, born Jacques Simon, (13 March 1743 \u2013 9 September 1823) was a French Protestant soldier and diplomat.<\/p>\n
Born in Mont-Val\u00e9rien, S\u00e9gur grew up in the French Revolutionary Wars under the leadership of his uncle, the Comte de S\u00e9gur. Serving in the French Army, S\u00e9gur went on to fight in the Wars of the American Revolution. He was made a colonel at the age of 25, taking part in the Battle of the Desert and the Battle of the Pyrenees. Later, he served with distinction in the War of the First Coalition against Austria, as well as in the Napoleonic Wars.<\/p>\n
In 1800, S\u00e9gur went to Spain, where he acquired the military rank of division general. He was also named comte de S\u00e9gur, with his family name being first changed to de Longueville.<\/p>\n
When the Royalists returned to power in 1814, S\u00e9gur was made a baron de l’Empire. He was made a duc de Longueville by Louis XVIII, making him a baron du sud du roi (French for “Baron of the South of the King”). During the Peninsular War, he fought for the Spanish, and then for the Allies.<\/p>\n
S\u00e9gur was made a count by Napoleon after the fall of the Empire, and then served as ambassador to Spain. S\u00e9gur died at Langon in 1823, having outlived both his adoptive nephews, and the man who had taken his surname. He was buried in Langon cathedral.<\/p>\n
