In the adult rat, glutamate receptors are known to be localized primarily to cerebral blood vessels. However, a decreased ability of TBI rats to regulate vascular responses to glutamate would lead to increased extracellular concentrations of glutamate, thereby enhancing excitatory responses and neurotoxicity to the brain. The presence of non-NMDA receptors on the endothelial cells of cerebral blood vessels will be examined by using immunocytochemical localization techniques with antibodies generated against NMDARs.
