In our model, infection with S. aureus Newman strain within the bronchial explants resulted in rapid and extensive microbial growth which was completely eliminated by day 29. The lungs showed both intra-alveolar and peribronchial abscess formation and necrosis, confirmed by H&E staining and modified acid-fast staining. The porcine model offers a suitable model for the study of bacterial pneumonia in which the abscesses were reproducibly formed in association with necrosis.
