New Jersey\u2019s embattled \u201csuperbug\u201d may have escaped into the wild after it was first detected in August, a top public health official said Thursday.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are going to need to continue to test for it in the wild,\u201d said Carol Emspak, the state\u2019s environmental health director. She said the fox squirrel (Sciurus niger) \u2014 a \u201cprimary pest\u201d whose population has risen significantly in the state \u2014 is a \u201clikely site\u201d for the colistin-resistant bug.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt can be easily introduced into hospitals,\u201d Emspak said at a news conference in Princeton.<\/p>\n
As The Post reported, an outbreak of the newly named bug is spreading rapidly, killing as many as 80 people and sickening hundreds more across at least 18 states.<\/p>\n
Still, the death toll is likely to rise and authorities warned that more people may be sickened.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s just getting out there \u2014 and we are going to find it,\u201d said Michael Fine, the director of the state Department of Health\u2019s Division of Epidemiology and Prevention Services.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are going to find it in the wild,\u201d Emspak echoed.<\/p>\n
Emspak said the discovery of the bug \u2014 causing five deaths in New Jersey \u2014 is a \u201ctremendous success,\u201d adding that authorities first detected it on a garbage dump in Woodbridge, along the state\u2019s border with the New York City suburbs, in August.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are still trying to track it down, but we believe that it is probably the wild population of the fox squirrel that is infecting the patients,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Emspak said that \u201csevere, protracted\u201d infections of the bug have been identified in four out of 20 counties in New Jersey.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s the highest I have ever seen it.\u201d<\/p>\n
The first case was reported in February, Fine said. Since then, a total of 140 cases have been reported, leading to 50 percent of the state\u2019s 1,110 confirmed cases.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are on the alert. This is only the beginning,\u201d Emspak said.<\/p>\n
Other state health officials stressed that there is no need for New Jerseyans to panic. They also said that there is no known risk to the public if<\/p>\n
