There are many other image-editing programs, including Adobe’s own Photoshop Elements and Corel’s PaintShop Pro. All are available at retail or can be purchased online. Figure 15-1 provides a comparison of two of the most popular image editors. Each has its own unique set of functions.<\/p>\n **Figure 15-1:** Photoshop and Corel PaintShop Pro.<\/p>\n Adobe Photoshop Elements<\/p>\n Adobe Photoshop Elements<\/p>\n Adobe’s Photoshop Elements is a better-quality alternative to Photoshop. Like Photoshop, it supports many layers that enable the user to add additional levels of editing to images. One of the major differences between Elements and Photoshop is that Elements’ editing tools are a lot easier to use than the vast array of layers in Photoshop. Elements also has the ability to enlarge images, adjust levels, crop areas, and perform retouching on images, but it doesn’t support layer-based editing, as does Photoshop.<\/p>\n The comparisons between Elements and Photoshop are shown in the figure and described in the following sections:<\/p>\n Photoshop: An expert-level image-editing program and software package used by designers, graphic artists, and photographers. (For more information on the features offered in Photoshop, visit the official Adobe website at `www.adobe.com\/photoshop`.<\/p>\n Photoshop Elements: A similar image-editing program used by professionals as a cheaper alternative.<\/p>\n Despite the similarities and overlap of features between Photoshop Elements and Photoshop, Elements is a significantly easier-to-use program than Photoshop. The basic editing tools and functions of Photoshop are also present in the Elements version, but only at a basic level.<\/p>\n Figure 15-1 on the left is a comparison of Photoshop (the big version) and Elements. You can see that the major features are pretty similar \u2014 the editing-tools toolbars are the same, for example \u2014 but Elements’ features are more accessible and easier to use. You can see from the figure that Elements has the basic editing tools like Rotate, Crop, and Flip that you have in Photoshop. Also notice that some of the major Photoshop tools like the Lasso, Magic Wand, and Spot Healing Brush are present in Elements, but in a different location. Figure 15-1 on the right depicts the main tools that are present in Elements but<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n So, what is the best time to learn Photoshop? When you are a pro? When you want to grow as a designer? Or, when you\u2019re just starting out?<\/p>\n There\u2019s no magic answer to this but there\u2019s one fact.<\/p>\n Learning Photoshop has a tendency to slow you down or limit your ability to progress further on the web.<\/p>\n You see, Photoshop has an unprecedented set of abilities, capabilities, and features. And many of these don\u2019t lend themselves well to web design or online work.<\/p>\n This is why many designers, and certainly all web design students, avoid Photoshop. They only use it when they need to do just one or two things. And because it\u2019s so powerful, it\u2019s a great asset to have.<\/p>\n As a designer, you may be the type of person who enjoys the extra time and freedom that comes with being able to edit and export images with precision.<\/p>\n With these benefits in mind, is now a good time to learn Photoshop? Yes. It\u2019s now the perfect time to learn Photoshop, regardless of what you\u2019re working on.<\/p>\n When should I learn Photoshop?<\/p>\n The best time to learn Photoshop is when it\u2019s most convenient for you. There are many obvious, and not so obvious, benefits of learning Photoshop. While you\u2019re learning Photoshop, look at your current web projects and ask yourself if it\u2019s worth the time.<\/p>\n As a graphic designer or web designer, you may find that it\u2019s easier to use a feature or feature of Photoshop to do things on your web projects. That\u2019s completely fine.<\/p>\n But, as a web designer, you should know that many of these tools and methods won\u2019t translate easily to the web.<\/p>\n Here are some examples:<\/p>\n If you\u2019re designing a logo, you may be tempted to use Photoshop\u2019s Logo feature to create an image. It\u2019s the easiest way to get the logo design you\u2019re looking for. It\u2019s how I learned Photoshop when I first got started. But, logos aren\u2019t designed to be zipped up and inserted into a WordPress theme. Just about any logo or logo style you design will be changed by the way it is treated by a theme. And the most common way to change a logo is to change the CSS of the WordPress theme. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Clone Stamp is an effective tool for video retouching. With a video sequence set as the background, place the foreground element (such as a person’s face) and set the Clone Stamp Tool as a foreground mask. Brushes, one of the most useful tools in Photoshop, can be used for various effects, including painting, erasing or retouching images, creating textures, removing blemishes, finding objects, retouching videos, creating animations, etc.<\/p>\n After creating a new document, you can click Tools to open the Brush Tool and choose a brush with which to start editing, or you can click the Eraser to erase pixels and remove unwanted objects.<\/p>\n Note: Brushes are extremely useful and should be used sparingly with all objects and images, because they often produce larger changes than you intended. Don’t use a brush to create a new image if you want the final result to look realistic, because sometimes the results may be too drastic.<\/p>\n Effects in Photoshop<\/p>\n When an image is edited, effects are added to make the image look more realistic. Effects change the background to a blur or the overall saturation of the image, or they can be added to modify skin or eyes, etc. There are thousands of effects to choose from.<\/p>\n Photoshop also contains some special effects, such as Liquify, which lets you change the shape of any object or apply filters to an image.<\/p>\n Liquify, one of the most popular effects, lets you manipulate pixels, and you can combine it with other tools for all kinds of interesting results.<\/p>\n Creating Images and Videos in Photoshop<\/p>\n Photoshop is a very powerful software for creating images and videos, because it allows you to use many functions, filter, or brushes, with all kinds of previews, in addition to effects, editing, or layers<\/p>\n <\/p>\n<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n your business and so would you encourage your clients or business partners to consider listening to your advice and feedback?<\/p>\n Yes, no and it depends. Unless you\u2019re in a mind-reading business, the answer is no. But if you can add value, improve processes and reduce costs and risks then absolutely. Clients may have an opinion on how you work, so be frank and open with them.<\/p>\n Think about the way that you act on a job, and how much of that behaviour is predictable or intentional. Knowing what to expect, avoiding unforeseen issues and giving feedback can save time and money. The same applies to your clients. You\u2019re a business and you do business, so you should know what you\u2019re like and you shouldn\u2019t surprise a client unnecessarily.<\/p>\n 4. What are your policy and procedure on incoming work?<\/p>\n This is an area that can be tricky for freelancers, especially those with long contracts or with flexible term arrangements.<\/p>\n Are you happy to take on a project that you don\u2019t feel able to manage? Are you worried about hitting your milestones? Are you being held to unrealistic standards?<\/p>\n It might be a long-term or ongoing project and it might be a short-term contract with a single milestone. You\u2019re a business and you should have policies and procedures.<\/p>\n You may think that a client can take the work home with them, but if you have a team of freelancers, that might not be the case. Even a contract that states \u201cThis is my work and you can\u2019t take it away\u201d might not deter a client from taking work home or asking for a proposal. If your standard business practice is to do that, and you need to improve it, make sure you do so.<\/p>\n 5. Do you consider yourself to be a good team player?<\/p>\n This may not necessarily be in-line with the skills you think you have.<\/p>\n Everyone has a different view of team work and effective collaboration. Some people work very differently to others and it\u2019s important that the skills that work best for them are utilised within their team.<\/p>\n Do you make it your business to work well with others and to be encouraging to others? Are you happy to share responsibility for projects? Do you consider yourself to be a good listener?
