The available data from rich countries shows that women didn’t live longer than men in the 19th century. Why do women live so much longer than men today and 52.174.6.235/wiki/Why_Women_Are_More_Likely_To_Live_Longer_Than_Men why has this advantage increased over time? There isn’t much evidence and we only have some solutions. Although we know that there are biological, behavioral and environmental factors that play an integral role in women’s longevity more than men, we do not know how much each factor contributes.

It is known that women live longer than men, regardless of weight. However, this is not due to the fact that certain biological or non-biological factors have changed. What are these factors that have changed? Some are well known and relatively straightforward, like the fact that men smoke more often. Some are more complex. For example, there is evidence that in rich countries the female advantage increased in part because infectious diseases used to affect women disproportionately a century ago, so advances in medicine that reduced the long-term health burden from infectious diseases, especially for survivors, ended up raising women’s longevity disproportionately.

Everywhere in the world women tend to live longer than men

The first chart below shows life expectancy at birth for men and women. As we can see, all countries are above the diagonal parity line , which means that in every country that a baby girl can be expected to live for longer than a newborn boy.1

This chart illustrates that, although there is a women’s advantage in all countries, the differences across countries can be substantial. In Russia, women live 10 years more than men. In Bhutan there is a difference of only half a year.

__S.17__

__S.19__

The female advantage in life expectancy was less in countries with higher incomes than it is today.

Let’s see how the female longevity advantage has changed in the course of time. The chart below illustrates the male and female life expectancies at birth in the US in the years 1790-2014. Two points stand out.

First, there’s an upward trend. Men and women in the US are living much, much longer than they did a century ago. This is in line with historical increases in life expectancy everywhere in the world.

Second, the gap is increasing: While the advantage of women in terms of life expectancy was extremely small however, it has grown significantly over time.

When you click on the option “Change country’ on the chart, check that these two points also apply to the other countries with available data: Sweden, France and the UK.

{"_s2mail":"
1
16935
