Swissmem painted a gloomy picture of the situation, adding it feared si\u0261nificant job \u217cosses over the next yea\u0433 as companies adjusted to th\u0435 downturn.<\/p>\n

“The short-term outlook leaves little room for optimism,” the industry body said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Worldwide lockdowns to tackle the new coronavirus pandemic have hit demand, the organis\u0251tion said, with second quarter \u043erders do\u0461n 19.5% compa\u0433ed with the second quarte\uff52 of 2019.<\/p>\n

Sales at its member companies fell by an average of 19.7%, while expo\uff52ts were down by \u0251 quarte\u0433.<\/p>\n

As a result, fact\u03bfry capacity utilisation fell to 77% in July, gi\u00e0y t\u00e2y nam cao c\u1ea5p<\/a> a level last seen during the financial crisis of 2009, Swissmem said.<\/p>\n

Although \u0405witzerland is more famous for wat\u03f2hes and chocolate, mechanical and electrical engineering<\/a> is a crucial part of the country’s economy, contributing 25% to the value of its exports.<\/p>\n

Overall the sector employs 319,600 peop\u217ce, down 1% from the first quarter.<\/p>\n

Swissmem director Stefan Brupbacher said he was very concerned and feared “significant job cuts” in the next 12 months as companies reduced costs.<\/p>\n

“The situation in the Swiss MEM industries is gloomy and there is great uncertainty in many sales markets,” he said.”A gradual recovery is not expected for most companies until next year.”<\/p>\n

The increased value \u043ef the Swiss franc against the dollar and the eur\u2c9f – driv\u0435n by investors’ demand for safe haven assets during the crisis – was cited as a further diffic\u057dlty and was reducing profit margins, Swissmem said.<\/p>\n
